DACA
In September, 2017 the Trump administration announced the end of the DACA program. This piece is in one way a dirge for DACA. When chanted, the letters “D, A, C, A” sound very similar to Dies Irae, the Latin hymn for the dead. However, this piece is also a celebration. In Mexican culture, death is not always as sad, or permanent, as it is viewed in other cultures. On Day of the Dead, for example, the dead return to the living and it is a night of celebration. This piece is a lament as well as a celebration of DACA - a program that is not dead, but ready to come back in a new and more permanent form.
Here is the score:
Sing and/or play “D, A, C, A” solemnly, as a chant. Begin in unison, then gradually drift apart and continue the chant. End together with an “Amen” over a G-D plagal cadence.
Commissioned by Wild Up as part of the group's Postal Pieces series.
